Property Seminar (Auckland & Wellington)

In May, HKNZBA hosted a Property Seminar with Bayleys Real Estate Ltd in Auckland and Wellington.

Mr John Chow, the Director of Chow Group, presented his “rags to riches” story of how he was able to go from nought to $200 million property portfolio in 25 years. He is the only Chinese person on the New Zealand rich list.

Mr Ian Little, Senior Manager of Research at Bayleys, also presented a property market overview. Bayleys’ Research Division tracks trends impacting all property sectors across New Zealand and publishes reports on its findings as well as presenting them to franchise partners, industry groups, building owners and tenants. Ian’s wealth of experience and expertise is often sought by a wide range of media outlets.

HKNZBA would like to thank Bayleys Real Estate Ltd for sponsoring the events.

MFAT Head of Mission Breakfast (Auckland)

HKNZBA co-hosted a Head of Mission breakfast with the Japanese New Zealand Business Council and the Korean New Zealand Business Council.

Gabrielle Rush, the New Zealand Consul-General to Hong Kong and Macao, gave an interesting overview of the current economic situation in Hong Kong.

She emphasised the value of Hong Kong in its own right, as New Zealand’s 11th largest trading partner. It is a global financial centre and regional hub and this is very unlikely to change in the near future, even with the rise of Shanghai.

Although the economy in Hong Kong has slowed down, especially in retail in tourism, Gabrielle asserted that it would be a long time before the political situation with China affects the Hong Kong economy. The Hong Kong Government is working hard to maintain good relations with China, and to ensure that good economic conditions remain. Although the downturn is affecting some parts of the retail sector, it is not affecting the entire market, and Gabrielle is confident that this decline is only temporary.

Gabrielle identified opportunities in technological start ups, natural cosmetic products and horses.

She is looking forward the Hong Kong Sevens, not only for the rugby, but for the opportunities to showcase New Zealand for its products and as a destination, as it is the biggest week of corporate hospitality in the year.

We would like to thank MFAT for making this event possible, BNZ for hosting, and to all the speakers at the event.

EPICNZ Conference

Official EPIC NZ Conference 2016 Banner

EPICNZ is returning 27 May 2016, with a key focus on Innovation, Diversity and Building Connections.

EPICNZ (Ethnic People in Commerce New Zealand) is an annual conference facilitated by the Office of Ethnic Communities to bring together New Zealand’s business people, ranging from those at the outset of their business careers to experienced leaders.

The 2016 Conference provides a forum for attendees to:

  • build connections and network with other ethnic and local and international business communities (including Maori, Pacific and Ethnic businesses)
  • engage with ideas about emerging issues, trends and opportunities
  • hear from successful business people
  • discover opportunities for business expansion and collaboration
  • explore potential markets and trading opportunities.

We seek to ensure that the annual conference is made up of a diverse range of participants who can network and learn from one another. Every year our audience is made up of a range of business leaders and representatives, including small business owners, SME’s (Small Medium Enterprises), commercial enterprises, academic institutions and relevant government agencies.

EPICNZ is not only an opportunity for ethnic business leaders to network with one another, but a platform to build connections between the ethnic business community and mainstream, Māori and Pacific businesses.

(Auckland) Hong Kong Festival – Grand Annual Gala Dinner

HKNZBA celebrated the Hong Kong Festival on the 27 August by holding a Banquet Dinner at the Langham Auckland.

HKNZBA felt incredibly fortunate for Minister Hon Todd McClay’s attendance as the keynote speaker of the event. His presentation was insightful and interactive. Minister McClay is the Minister of Revenue, Minister for State Owned Enterprises, Associate Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Associate Minister of Trade.

Other highlights from the evening included the noodle-pulling performance, especially our Association’s President’s own attempt at making the noodles.

There was also a silent auction and a lucky draw, with prizes from our sponsors Cathay Pacific, the Langham Auckland, KVB Kunlun New Zealand Limited, Forest Harrison Lawyers, the Waitemata Honey Company, the Neonatal Trust, and HKETO. HKNZBA was incredibly pleased to raise $3250.00 for the Neonatal Trust, which provides support to families of premature or sick full-term babies as they make their journey through neonatal care, the transition home, and onwards.

Special thanks to our sponsors, speaker Minister Hon Todd McClay, Bernard Lo, Deputy-Director of the Hong Kong Economic Trade Office, and the Langham Auckland for hosting this wonderful event.

Dr Simon Galpin, Director-General of Invest HK gave a report on the investment and business market in Hong Kong, and highlighted the growth and potential for start ups.

Finally, Ms Bonnie Shek, Director of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, described the opportunities in Hong Kong for international trade and outlined the various trade fairs available in the coming year.

(Auckland & Wellington) Seminar with Rod MacKenzie

On Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11 June, we had Rod MacKenzie speak to guests about NZ Focus’ journey. Mr MacKenzie is the Executive Director of NZ Focus; he had previously worked for New Zealand Trade and Enterprise for over a decade, and in particular he held the post of China Regional Director for a number of years.

Mr MacKenzie gave deep insight into NZ Focus’ ventures, the challenges it faced and how it overcame them, and significantly, its use of Hong Kong as a springboard in its expansion into China. Mr MacKenzie also outlined NZ Focus’ current operations in China, in particular its use of business-to-consumer online retail, which guests found very interesting.

The seminar in Auckland was followed by drinks and canapés for attendees; and in Wellington it was conducted throughout a two-course lunch. Thank you very much to the Langham Auckland, and the Wellington Club, for hosting these events.

Please see the photos from the Auckland event below. These photos are also available here.
