The Langham Auckland is leading the way for sustainable New Zealand tourism with the renewal of two gold awards honouring the hotel’s commitment and advocacy of sustainable tourism practices. The luxury hotel’s internationally recognised EarthCheck Gold certification and Qualmark Enviro Gold rating have just been renewed.
The Langham achieved a New Zealand first as well as a regional one by being the first ‘Accommodation – Business Hotel’ in the Pacific region (including Australia) to receive EarthCheck Gold status in 2012.
EarthCheck’s stringent certification process requires the hotel to submit 12 months of operational data which is benchmarked against industry Best Practice standards worldwide. A number of key indicators are measured including energy and water consumption, total waste production and community commitment.
The Qualmark Enviro Gold award recognises New Zealand tourism and travel operators who are exceptional leaders in sustainable tourism.
Several key environmental initiatives The Langham Auckland implements include sourcing local products, using baling machinery to process recyclables, refilling ink cartridges, supplying cardboard coat hangers and installing energy-saving light bulbs and thermostats with motion sensors in rooms.
The Langham Auckland’s managing director Franz Mascarenhas says he is “extremely proud” of every staff member for adhering to and retaining the high standards represented by these two gold awards.
“We take our social and environmental commitment to embracing, advocating and practicing good sustainable business very seriously and it’s wonderful to receive recognition for this.”
The Langham Auckland also supports two community charities as part of its commitment to social responsibility – Garden to Table, which teaches school children to grow, harvest and prepare fresh fruit and vegetables and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
